The coalition comprising Water Transmission Company (WTCO) and ACWA held a kick-off meeting in Damascus, Syria, for the tripartite agreement signed with the Syrian Ministry of Energy. The meeting marked the start of implementing the agreement and establishing an execution plan to support the development of water sector projects in the Syrian Arab Republic.
The agreement aims to conduct preliminary feasibility studies based on an assessment of Syria’s existing water resources, identify current and future water needs, and evaluate the optimal mix of seawater desalination and the utilization of surface water and groundwater resources. These studies will lay the groundwork for the development of integrated water desalination and transmission projects with production and transmission capacities of up to 1.2 million cubic meters per day and a transmission system extending approximately 400 kilometers.
During the meeting, the coalition reviewed the work plan, reaffirmed the agreement’s objectives and implementation timeline, assigned responsibilities, and established mechanisms for communication and coordination among the coalition members and the relevant consulting and implementation entities.
Eng. Abdullah Hejji, Chief Engineering & Projects Management Officer at WTCO, stated that the kick-off meeting represents the first practical step toward leveraging technical and engineering expertise and capabilities to establish the foundations of a sustainable water system. He added that the system will draw on advanced technologies and leading international practices to help secure Syria’s future water needs.
